The following unix shell servers are available:

  • nightmare.cs.uct.ac.za

To access these servers use an SSH client to connect to connect to the server with your CS Login accounts details.

We recommend the following SSH clients which are installed on the Computer laboratory workstations.

  • Linux/unix: ssh (part of the openssh page)
  • Mac: ssh
  • Windows: Putty SSH

You can connect to this service from outside of UCT.

Services

The following services are available:

  • Remote access, including from off-campus
  • MySQL Databases
  • Various command line programming tools
  • CPUs for executing long-running processes on
  • Access to your home directory on the File storage service.

What is a shell server?

A shell server is traditionally remote server running the Unix operating system, which gives access to a shell via a command-line interface protocol such as telnet or SSH.
